From Isle of Man Airport to the International Stage: Ed's Special Olympics Journey Begins

For the past 11 years, Ed has been a familiar face at Isle of Man Airport. Known for his determination and infectious enthusiasm, he has become a valued member of the airport team and a popular colleague.

Now, Ed is embarking on the journey of a lifetime as he prepares to represent the Isle of Man in swimming at the Special Olympics Sweden Invitational Games 2026 in Malmö.

For Ed, reaching this stage is the result of dedication, hard work and commitment to the sport he loves.

A Sporting Celebration Without Borders

From 4 to 6 September, Malmö will host the Special Olympics Sweden Invitational Games 2026, bringing together approximately 2,000 athletes and participants from 26 countries in a celebration of sport, inclusion, friendship and achievement.

This year, 20 talented athletes from the Isle of Man will proudly wear the Island's colours as they compete alongside athletes from across Europe and beyond. Together, they carry with them the support, encouragement and good wishes of an entire Island community.

While competition will undoubtedly be fierce, the Special Olympics movement is about much more than medals. It celebrates courage, inclusion, friendship and the opportunity for every athlete to reach their full potential.

A Proud Departure from the IOM Airport 

The photographs accompanying this article capture members of Team Isle of Man as they departed from Isle of Man Airport on the first leg of their journey to Sweden.

There was a real sense of excitement in the terminal as athletes, coaches, family members, supporters and airport colleagues gathered to wish the team well. Amid the hugs, photographs and final goodbyes, there was a shared feeling of pride as Team Isle of Man set off to represent their Island on an international stage.
