Flying with Dementia? We're Here to Help Make Every Journey Easier

Published: 21 September 2026

Travelling is about connecting with loved ones, creating memories and enjoying new experiences. For people living with dementia, however, airports and unfamiliar environments can sometimes feel daunting. The good news is that with a little preparation and the right support, air travel can be a comfortable and positive experience.

As part of Dementia Awareness Week 2026, Isle of Man Airport is highlighting the support available to help passengers living with dementia travel with greater confidence and peace of mind.

Planning Ahead Makes a Difference

If you or a loved one is living with dementia, we recommend contacting your airline before you travel. Many airlines can arrange additional assistance, helping passengers navigate the airport, boarding process and arrival procedures more easily.

Recognising Hidden Disabilities

Isle of Man Airport is proud to be part of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme. Wearing a Sunflower Lanyard discreetly lets airport and airline staff know that a passenger may require additional time, understanding or support during their journey.

Our team recognises the Sunflower symbol and is always ready to assist where needed.

Keep Essential Information Close to Hand

Having travel documents, medication details, emergency contact information and any important medical information organised and easily accessible can help reduce stress for both passengers and their travelling companions.

Bring Familiar Comforts

Small, familiar items can provide reassurance throughout the journey. Favourite snacks, music, photographs, books or headphones can help ease anxiety and create a greater sense of comfort in unfamiliar surroundings.

We're Here to Help

We understand that every passenger's needs are different. Whether you need to stay together during security screening, require additional support through the airport, or simply have questions before you travel, our friendly team is here to help make your journey as smooth and stress-free as possible.
